Speech, Speech, Speech

I think for a speech to be successful in a high school graduate eyes is to make the audience laugh at some point during the speech. Also the speech can't be so serious to make the audience to be bored. You have to be serious and motivated to give a speech that will influence friends, classmates and family if possible. In a commencement speech there should be a limit to the time for the speech. Make it about yourself and classmates in a good way. Also, people giving the speeches need to talk slowly and loud enough so people can hear you. People need to honor the occasion and talk about what they have experienced and accomplished in four years. If I had any person speak at my graduation, I would want Channing Tatum to speak. He is hilarious and he seems like he would enjoy giving a speech to high school students. I would want Channing Tatum because he seems like the celebrity who would love to give a speech and he can be inspirational and because he is also very popular which can get St Francis High School more noticed. I would want him to talk about what he did after high school and his experiences that he had while in high school. It can be influential for people who aren't sure about what experiences they had.

What's in a Name? A team by any other name would still play the same...maybe?

I don't think changing a name with help any situation or solve a problem. It can cause more conflict than it should with lawsuits and the Senators voting and giving their opinion about name changing. The Senators can do whatever they want with any type of situation, whether or not people aren't happy about a name changing especially if it is a popular sports team. I think it should be up to the team, owners and fans to decide whether or not the names should change. If it was offending people, like the Washington Redskins team, then it should be in control of whoever wants to deal with the negativity. I don't see the "redskin" name being offensive because no one really pays much attention to the name, just how good that team is. It is offensive to those who want it to offensive. The only people who benefit from the change would be the players on that team because they can't control what goes on with their team name. All the players just do what they're paid to do and it doesn't really affect them. The only thing the players will have to change is the colors they wear. I think the fans and the owners of the team will be hurt because the fans buy their team jerseys, t-shirts, hats, etc. and if the name gets changed, it will be a waste of money for them to even buy stuff. It won't even be worth anything because that team won't exist anymore. The owners of the team will be hurt by the change because the owner put so much money to make this team as good as possible and spent a lot of money on a stadium, players, colors, mascots, logos, etc. I think the Sterling case has impacted a lot of teams all over the world. Many of those teams owners don't want to have to go through anything that involves slang words that will affect people.

The original mascot was Miami Redskins, but people didn't like the fact that the name because it was offensive to Native Americans. The Native Americans were offended because it was being used as a term that hurt the feelings of the Native Americans and they wanted the name changed. It made the Native Americans feel like they didn't belong. In 1997, the name changed to Miami University Redhawks instead. It is not offensive.

Facebook Power or Facebook Powerless?

I think that Facebook does impact our mood because people can put whatever they want on their social media. So if people put how they feel on their Facebook it will effect our feelings and mood. I agree with the first article because Facebook is one of those websites where anyone can post anything about anyone at anytime. For example, there can be a group of friends that are really close, then all of a sudden one friend does something that irritates a friend. The rest of the group of friends can go on Facebook and be mean and talk about the friend that was annoying and irritating. If the friend who was being bullied saw those posts and statutes, that can make the friend feel negative about themselves and not wanna even do anything with her life. People have their own opinion about making accounts and even if it makes people happy, those people don't have to have an account because it can cause drama. People that are happy should stay happy. If people are miserable, many people would have an account to keep in touch with people, they haven't seen forever. I don't think Facebook has the power to control us, but it seems like people let Facebook control them. I do think society is addicted to social media because no one can ever get off it. They are on social media for about 15-20 hours a day. The more kids that are on social media the more addictive they will become to social media.

Are you looking up or looking down?

I think that Gary Turk is saying that too many people are looking and using their phones more than they are actually trying to have a conversation. It seems like the more people are on their phone than actually talking to people. Yes what Gary is saying is true because people are dataholics and can't get off their technology. I miss out on many things like meeting new people because I am on my phone and not being social in the real world. I can change this by doing more than being on my phone and social media. Our society is dearly changing negatively because no one can ever stay off their phones for 5 minutes. It is hard for most people to get off them. Also communication is changing negatively because there is no one socially talking face-to-face anymore like our society used to. There are not really any positive things about using technology. It seems like the more advanced the technology becomes in the future, will make our society look bad because no one will ever communicate socially without using their cell phone again. Eventually, we will be in a community where there is people just sitting on their phones doing nothing. I am guilty of not "looking up" because I don't always look up, but I don't always look down at the same time. I can get off my phone and look up when needed to. Most people can't even look up for a second. A lot of teenagers look down whenever and all the time every day.

What Constitutes Art?

What's happening in Greece can be both art and graffiti. It looks like it's graffiti, but has the components of being art. The drawings are really good and they show very good art skills. Graffiti is most likely gang symbols or very harsh words in most cases. The Athens courts should determine whether or not these paintings are graffiti or art. No one wanted these paintings there, and people are showing off their art skills, but it's still illegal to do. The paintings should be painted over because they are illegally there when there not supposed to be. If one person is offended because there paintings are painted over, then it won't be a big. If a hundred people are offended, that is a slightly different issue because there will be many arguments. It's not up to the people who put the drawings there; it's the cities decision on what's best. I agree with iNO's statement because people do express themselves, but shouldn't do it if it's illegal. I like the painting that involves the car on the right side of the picture. It is very creative and colorful. The artist that drew this definitely showed their feelings. Words are definitely an issue because it can mean something in so many ways and people can be very offended.

Hoping for Asylum, Migrants Strain U.S. Border

I think the US should be responsible for these individuals who decide to sneak into the US without permission because they are in the US. If they weren't in the US it would be the countries problem wherever they are. Since these individuals are in Texas, then the US is the one responsible because that's what country they're in. The immigrants are no longer immigrants when it comes to how long they have been in the US. For example, if the immigrants are in the US for 7-8 years without permission, they should be allowed to be apart of the US. I wouldn't say the American people, but the government should be in charge of these individuals because it is their responsibilty to keep this country from anything bad happenening. If the government doesn't control immigrants like these, then the whole country can be at risk of something happening. If their are many immigrants for different countries, it would be very difficult for each country to keep up with all these immigrants. And besides the US doesn't take care of ourselves. The US spends money on other countries to provide them for better things. The US hardly takes care of their own country so I don't think it's every country for themselves in this type of situation. I don't think my hard work and taxes should be toward these people, especially if their sneaking in. I mean there are some children that are involved, but I don't want my money going to people who I don't think can even speak english. In my opinion, if you want to be apart of the US, then you should prove that your an American and can speak English before you do anything. I don't think it is fair that every person that works very hard to provide for their family be taken away from them so these immigrants can become apart of the US.

15.16.17...Does that make you an Adult?

I think it depends on the type of situation that the child is in because it depends on the physical and mental being of the child. Kids are adults legally when they're 18 but every child has a situation or mindset and some teens don't act like they're an adult when they're 18 or older. They don't act like their age most of the time anyways so it wouldn't even matter if they are called an adult or a teenager. I think the crime should usually fit the punishment and the amount of time you serve. For example, if a 16 year old was charged with first degree murder the sentence could be up to life in prison without parole or the death sentence. I think this is fair because if the child/teen wants to do adult things that involve breaking the law they should suffer the consequences like an adult. We have the legal age so everyone who is smart enough about their actions can go on with their life and those who don't want to follow the rules can suffer. It is all up to the teenager on what they want to do with their life. I don't think the teenagers are mature enough to handle any situation that involves prison or jail because they don't really care and everything is a joke to them. The parents are letting the kids do whatever they want without consequences and not parenting them correctly so that makes the kids think they can do whatever they want. This crisis cannot be easily resolved because no matter how hard the parents try to stop their kids from breaking the rules, it would be too late to change their actions because that's how they learned from parents and it can't be stopped.

Google, Google, Google...Do you really have the right to encrypt?

Whoever the creator of Google is, they can do whatever they want when it comes to the encryption. Most people will argue that Google can't do this but it's Google's decision so they do have a right. They want to know what people are searching on their engine so they have a right to do this. I think that everything that we search should be private at least if were using our schools Wi-Fi. Google should not make everything we search public. The World Wide Web is public because anyone can use it whenever and so in that case it is a public domain. I am in between whether or not the government should watch what we do online. I disagree because I can search something on Google that I don't want anyone to know about. If I don't want my parents to know about it I certainly don't want the government to know what I'm doing or searching online. I agree with the government watching because maybe the government can stop people from wasting people's times and searching stupid stuff online. If the government is eligible to see what you are doing online then I basically have no freedom at all when it comes to the internet if the government is all over my case and eavesdropping in my business. There basically wouldn't be any freedom left for myself if Google decides to do this. I wouldn't trust either Google or the government because they shouldn't be in anyone's business when it comes to the internet.

Money, Money, Money...Is it really going to save our country?

The states that have the highest minimum wage is Washington, Oregon, Illinois, Nevada, Montana, Colorado, Ohio, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Connecticut. These states cost more to live there so they have a higher minimum wage so people can support their financial lives. Minnesota is the only state that has a lower minimum wage out of all 50 states. All the other states have the same minimum wage or a higher minimum wage. Most states have the same amount of minimum wage which is good. I don't think raising minimum rage is the answer to our economic crisis. I think razing minimum wage can make the economy better in a way. The more money people have can help the economy because they should have enough to pay their bills, debts, etc. The only problem is; would people earn that money? Many people work because they need money to pay bills, but if the minimum wage is raised, people may not even work to earn that money. They would probably just show up and do their shift and go home. People would only care about getting money and not about how good they are at doing their job. One reason minimum wage shouldn't be increased is because the amount of people that would want to work now because the amount per hour increased. There may not be any available jobs if everyone wants to work just because the amount of money was raised. People that would benefit from minimum wage would be people who can't afford to pay any of their bills, and lower class people. These people benefit the minimum wage raise because they can't always afford the things they need and those people work hard at their jobs and in today's society they still can't afford money. I don't think minimum wage should be increased. If other states that have the same minimum wage increases, then everyone else that has the same should be increased as well. I also think that all the states minimum wage should be the same amount. Some states, even if they are expensive to live in, all should have the same minimum wage. There should be no states that are higher or lower than others. Everyone should be treated equal. To fix the economy crisis, I would increase the minimum wage to the same as the higher states and make sure that everyone is treated equally throughout the 50 states. It's not fair that some states are higher than others and most of them are the same. If there are a few that are the highest, all the states should be the highest. I don't think anything can fix the economy crisis in the United States.

Your Right To Dress...Or Did You Lose that Freedom?

I don't think the school went to far because kids don't think about whether or not what their shirts say or what the logo is on it without hurting kids feelings with different races. It seems that the school administration cared more about the shirt than the students who were offended. The kids who wore their countries flag on their shirt were just showing they care about their country. The students who felt offended shouldn't be because those same students who are Latino could've wore a shirt that represents their country. The school shouldn't have made the students turn their shirts inside out for the day because it wasn't necessary for them to make them. There is nothing racial or offensive about wearing a shirt that represents your country. Everyone can do it to support their country. We do and we don't have respect for other countries. We have respect for other countries because they give us supplies and we communicate in someway with each other. We don't have respect for countries because other countries always want to start battles and wars with the US. If I was the principle at this school in California, I would've let the students wear the shirts. I wouldn't see anything wrong with students supporting their countries even if those students didn't know what the reaction of the Latino students were. I feel that the judge made the wrong decision by banning the shirts for the day. I don't think this case will even go to the supreme court because it isn't a case that should go to the supreme court because it is a misunderstanding and no big deal. If I was asked to turn the shirt inside out, I would say no. It is just a shirt and it's not like it is inappropriate. It just has United States flag on it. I don't see anything wrong with wearing it. I would be very mad and upset if they told me to turn it off.

I think we are willing to eat fast food because it is faster, easier to get and can be less expensive then actually going home and cooking something for yourself. Once a person gets fast food, the more the person will want to purchase fast food. Also I think we are willing to eat fast food because it can be different than cooking something at home. I think this impacts us because if someone reads the article and agrees with the things people are saying, those people may not want to ever go to a fast food place again. I am not a big fan of fast food because it isn't that good, but after reading the article, I for sure am never eating fast food again. In the future it seems like the food gets worse and worse and then people probably won't eat any of the food at fast food places. It can also impact us in the future because all the fast food restaurants will be shut down possibly or have many complaints about people becoming sick from food poisoning. To me, the most disgusting thing about fast food is the way they make their food. For example, McDonalds burgers are really greasy and their fries are disgustingly overcooked half the time. Another thing about fast food that is disgusting is the ingredients they use to make the food. Fast food doesn't really affect me because I don't really like or eat fast food so it doesn't really bother me. My family is really affected by fast food because if I show them what is wrong with fast food and how disgusting it is, they will most likely be disgusted and not want to eat at any of those places again.

I would not go to school for six years unless I really wanted to. If there was something that I was interested in and it required six years of high school I would take it because it would interest me and I'd take an opportunity that may not come again. It would be a lot of school and work, but it would interest me and I like being in school. Some benefits of going to school for 6 years is because you can become smarter and education is important and it would feel like going to college because when graduated from six years of high school, I would be 20 years old. I would take an opportunity and wouldn't really mind six years of high school. Most people would say that is ridiculous but everyone is different. Disadvantages of going to high school for six years is that it would feel like I'm never going to ever be out of school. I would be 20 years old who would still be in high school. That's a lot of school and really no time to myself like I have now. This is just a lot of work. Mostly the higher levels of education and school is a lot of work and takes a lot of time of my hands, but that is school. School is supposed to help people get smarter and learn new things that they didn't already know. If school was optional people would most likely not show up. The students who want to learn come to school to learn. The kids who don't care about school wouldn't show up. If school was an option, most schools would be empty because kids don't care about their education.

I think it sends a message to everyone that drinks Coca-Cola that no matter what country you live in or how you live that everyone can enjoy drinking Coca-Cola. I think Coca-Cola is sending a message that not only do Americans like drinking soda, but also other countries. There were different countries singing and speaking words and a couple times it seemed like they were saying America and about how those children in it felt about America. This commerical can upset people because Americans can become offensive because they may not understand what the children in the commercial meant. Also it can be offensive because the people in the video may not have noticed what they were doing. For example, the people who were in the water on their surfboards, Americans could take that offensive because they can be mocking the USA. This commercial is a poor and good commercial in many different ways. It is good because the people in the commercial were expressing their opinion toward Coca-Cola, the USA or their country. It was poor because we don't know what the people were saying in the commercial because it was in a different language. The commercial was good and bad because I think Coca-Cola made a commercial like this too show many different countries what they do to express their feelings.
